FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED
WITH OVER 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Avery’s Kitchen is family owned and operated by Avery Hernandez (Big Avery), Sandy Hernandez (Mom) and Avery M. Hernandez (Little Avery). Big Avery began cooking more than 40 years ago in Port Aransas, TX. Starting at the age of 12, he began stocking groceries and bussing tables at the Island Food Store under the tutelage of Roy Turnbuex, Pete Arzola Sr. (Big Pete) and Wilson White. Avery acquired the skills of baker, butcher and all around cook. From the Island Food Store Avery went to work at Moss Hall before joining Big Pete to create the Island Cafe and Smokehouse. From Island favorite “Fish-N-Chips” to the All U Can Eat Flounder, Pete and Avery created a menu that would please millions of people over the next 25 years. The future looked bright and business was booming but no one expected what would happen next. Big Pete Arzola suffered a heart attack and died in 1986, leaving the Island Cafe in the hands of the Arzola family. A year later, Avery left the restaurant he helped to build.
DOCKSIDE BAR & GRILL
THE NEXT 15 YEARS
After Big Avery left the Island Cafe, and a brief stint at Port Royal, he went to work for Bob and Carol Owens at Dockside Bar & Grill. Dockside is where the island favorite “two, two, two (2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon for $2) originated. Other popular dishes Avery concocted while at Dockside were the Western Omelet, Crab Omelet, Shrimp Omelet and even his Famous Chicken Enchiladas. Avery filled Dockside day and night with delicious food and a no-quit attitude for more than 15 years. After the restaurant sold and its doors were closed, Avery was blessed with the opportunity to own his own restaurant.
AVERY’S KITCHEN
AND HURRICANE HARVEY
Opening their doors in January of 2011, Avery and his family began to satisfy the local hunger of Port Aransas as well as the tourist cravings with Fat Fluffy Omelets, Homemade Shredded Hash Browns, Fish & Chips, Fresh Hand-breaded All U Can Eat Shrimp and Homemade Meatloaf. Avery’s Kitchen worked hard at providing top-notch service with every delicious meal served day-in and day-out for more than 7 years.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey destroyed Avery’s Kitchen, along with 95% of all businesses in Port Aransas, in August of 2017. Yet it seems like where one door had closed, another had opened. Avery’s Kitchen, LLC in New Braunfels, TX will pick up right where we left off. We are blessed to have the opportunity to greet you with a smile, cook you some delicious food and serve you some great coffee. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to satisfy your hunger and bless you with our service.
